Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," said his publicist, Danica Smith, in a statement from Los Angeles, California.
His publicist said no other details were available, and that his family's privacy be respected. She also revelaed that the pneumonia was not related to the comedian's sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease; the condition apparently went into remission in 2005.
Mac's comedy career at age eight, with a standup performance at a church dinner. Eventually, he took his act to comedy clubs in Chicago at age 20, in 1977.
He began his film career with a small role in Damon Wayans' Mo' Money in 1992. Since then, he has appeared in Spike Lee's 1996 drama Get on the Bus, the Ocean's Eleven series, and numerous other films.
Bernie Mac also had a self-titled television show, which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006. "The Bernie Mac Show," which told the story of a man raising his sister's three children, won a Peabody Award in 2002. The judges wrote that the sitcom transcended "race and class while lifting viewers with laughter, compassion -- and cool."
"But television handcuffs you, man," said Mac in 2001 Associated Press interview. "Now everyone telling me what I CAN'T do, what I CAN say, what I SHOULD do, and asking, 'Are blacks gonna be mad at you? Are whites gonna accept you?"'
Mac was also a part of the critically acclaimed comedy album and movie The Original Kings of Comedy, in which he co-starred with Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer. The album garnered a Grammy nomination for best comedy album in 2001.
In 2007 during an interview on CBS' "Late Show" with Dave Letterman, Mac revealed that he had plans to retire soon. "I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit," said Mac to Letterman. "I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977."
Mac survived by a daughter, Je'Niece, and wife, Rhonda McCullough. Je'Niece has a daughter, Jasmine.

According to the New York Post the initiative, named Summer Streets, is a pilot program that will close off seven miles of streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park in an effort to combat congestion.
A Brooklyn native himself, Jay said the project would provide teens an opportunity to get involved in positive things.
As part of the plan, the city will block traffic along parts of Lafayette Street, Fourth Avenue, Park Avenue and 72nd Street from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the next three Saturdays.
A bouncer for New York's Spotlight Live has confessed to killing a woman at the club during Lil Kim's birthday party on Sunday (August 3).
As reported earlier, 24-year-old Ingrid Rivera's body was found in a utiltity closet on the roof of Spotlight Live yesterday (August 6).
Rivera had attended the rapper's party on Sunday and was reported missing Tuesday (August 5).
According to The New York Times, Sayed Rahman, a bouncer at Spotlight Live, confessed to police today (August 7) that he hit Rivera at the back of the head with a metal pipe.
Rahman, 24, said he attacked Rivera because she refused his sexual advances.
Rahman has been charged with second degree murder and is facing life in prison if convicted. He has worked at the club for four years and had no criminal record.
Reps for Lil Kim have said that the rapper did not know Rivera and was unaware of the incident before it surfaced via the news.

Rick Ross' 'Be Out Day' charity event was disrupted and brought to an abrupt end by gunfire yesterday (August 6).
According to The Broward New Times, Ross was on stage performing when shots rang out across the street from the event. The shots sent the crowd which included young children and their parents into a panic.
Ross and other rappers at the event would calm the crowd down and continue to perform but police asked the event to be shut down for security reasons.
Police arrested one man and recovered a gun. They are currently looking for a second person who fled the scene. No injures were reported and police believe the men were shooting in the air.
Ross told The Broward New Times that he wanted to keep performing because he felt the crowd was safe and didn’t want to let his fans down. He also said he won’t let the incident stop him from holding another charity event.
“It’s another day in the city, I’m a keep it real,” Rick Ross said. “I feel like all the kids came and they left safe. Some dudes had a squabble on the side of the road and whatever happened, but other than that, all the kids got to see Rick Ross, Flo Rida, Brisco and we all had a good time.”
The body of a dead woman was reportedly found at a New York nightclub where Lil Kim recently held her birthday party.
According to The NY1 News, Lil Kim held her birthday party at the Spotlight Live Club on Sunday(August 3) and the body of 24-year-old Ingrid Rivera was found yesterday (August 6) in a utility closet on the club’s roof.
Authorities say Rivera attended the rapper's party and was reported missing on Tuesday (August 5).
A woman claiming to be Rivera’s friend told police that Rivera was involved in an altercation with club employees on the night of the party.
The club has not revealed a comment on the murder and sources say Lil Kim did not know Rivera and was unaware of the incident.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine what caused Rivera's death.

Rick Ross' reputation has been analyzed as of late. After reports that he was once a prison guard surfaced, many have been weighing in. Although Ross denies the reports, many have been speaking on how this affects the man, his music and fans' perspective on it all. Two of today's biggest news making musicians have now made their opinions on the matter known.
Akon, who has faced similar scrutiny, is now speaking up on the matter.
"It'll only affect Ross if Ross allows it to affect him," Akon told MTV. "Had I gone out and entertained the article, it would have blew the article out of proportion. Wherever they got their facts or information from, let that be what it is. You got your story out, thank you very much. I bow to it and keep it moving. Now, if you wanna entertain it, then you're gonna open up more worms you probably don't want opened up. So all Ross has to do is keep focusing on his music."
"The whole purpose of Konvict Music was to grab ex-convicts, felons. People head in that direction and steer them in the opposite direction. Just focus on my past and try to contradict whatever it is I might have said or lived and don't focus on the positive things I've done in society in general. If you have an article, at least balance it out. Let the people know the good things I've done, the schools I've built. The kids I feed in Africa. Don't just say, 'He wasn't locked up for three years.' I don't care if I was locked up for one day. It's that experience that allowed me to become that person who I am, to make a better society for who is listening."
Ludacris, who has also been scrutinized lately, also chimed in.
"I'll be honest with you, man...When I heard about it, I honestly thought to myself, 'Some of them correction officers are some of the most crooked individuals.' Whether he did that or not, it's all what you take from it."
"It's a lot of crooked cops out there," he continued. "They manipulate the system. So I'm just being real. When I heard about it, either way — if he did it, if he didn't do it — it could still be crooked from it. That's what it all comes down to. So that's Ludacris' two cents on the whole Rick Ross situation. To be real with you, man, if that's how you want to manipulate the system, that's how you do it. ... You get in the system. There you have it."
(I mean does it really matter, So what he had a job, he was 19, he's like what 30 now, that was a while ago, people change. My only issue is he keeps denying it, Just admit it, say it was a while ago, and lets move on. sheesh)

The first alcoholic beverages out of the deal between Dr. Dre and Drinks America are on their way, so get ready for Aftermath Cognac.
As previously reported, Dre, Interscope Geffen A&M Records and Drinks America formed a partnership earlier this year in which the super producer would help develop and market premium non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. And now, a new cognac in on the way.
According to Billboard.com, Drinks Americas Q4 earnings were released on Monday (August 4) and the company said it would introduce Aftermath Cognac in the next 60 days. The production, supply and European distribution of the cognac will be handled by Abecassis Cognac, a cognac producer.
An 80-proof flavored and unflavored sparkling vodka will follow within 60 days after Aftermath Cognac.
According to the earnings statement, both beverages will be introduced around the same time as Dr. Dre's long awaited Detox album, as a part of an integrated marketing plan.
The information sounds about right too. Dre said himself last month, via an interview with USA Today, that Detox would be out in "November or December."

Lil Jon has parted ways with longtime record label TVT Records.
TVT filed for bankruptcy last year and was recently acquired by The Orchard, a digital entertainment company.
According to The Associated Press, Lil Jon and The Orchard have come to an agreement which frees the rapper from his earlier obligations to TVT.
As part of the deal, Lil Jon will get the rights to the master recordings of his upcoming album Crunk Rock. In return, Jon will serve as a consultant for Orchard's Brand Entertainment Group and his older and newer material will be digitally issued by Orchard .
Lil Jon is now free to sign with another label as an artist.
“It's about time I get what's owed to me from the situation I was stuck in,” Lil Jon told The Associated Press. “Its unfortunate things have turned out the way they did, but artists deserve to be compensated fairly by their labels for the work they do, and that wasn't happenin'. In my case, I'm happy to finally be a free man and make a new start!”
After a three year feud of not speaking, subliminal and overt insults and an alleged physical confrontation, Outkast's Big Boi and his former artist Killer Mike have reconciled.
Atlanta's Maurice G. Garland, reported on the meeting firsthand. It seems both artists were encouraged to resolve the simmering conflict at the urging of close family members and a nasty bout of Atlanta weather.
"A bad storm hit Atlanta and knocked the power out over a large portion of the city, including the studio where Mike planned to record [another 'Sunday Morning Massacre']," writes Garland. "Big Boi's uncle Darnell and Bear were encouraging Big to peace things up once and for all."
Big's son Cross provided the additional prodding to bring Killer Mike and his father together after both men initially attempted to hide their strained relationship from their children.
Later, both men spoke on the phone to resolve all of their underlying issues, and later met at an event yesterday, where the above photo was taken.
It will be Budden's first official release in 5 years. The New Jersey rapper was previously signed to Def Jam Records and saw his sophomore project get pushed back repeatedly. Budden cut ties with Def Jam last year.
According to Budden's representative, Padded Room features no guest appearances and no 'big name' producers.
“There are no guest appearances on Joe's LP, he rides alone on it,” the rep told said “Also, all of the producers are basically unknown and hungry, just the way Joe likes it! The only "name" producer who contributes a track is MoSS (and he only produces one track).”
Padded Room will contain fourteen tracks including “ Blood On Wall” in which Budden takes shots at Mobb Deep's Prodigy. Prior to being incarcerated earlier this year, Prodigy called Budden "the worst rapper alive" on a street DVD.
Budden responds to Prodigy's statement on “Blood On Wall” by poking fun at his gangster image and labeling him irrelevant.
The first single off Padded Room is “Touch & Go” . Budden will be releasing a video for the song in September.
Below is the tracklisting for Padded Room:
1.) Now I Lay
2.) Touch N Go
3.) If I Gotta Go
4.) Blood On The Wall
5.) Don’t Make Me
6.) In My Sleep
8.) I Couldn’t Help It
9.) Do Tell
10.) My Life
11.) Better Me
12.) Just to Be Different
13.) Angel In My Life
14.) Pray For Me
Ghostface recently revealed that his upcoming project will be an all-R&B album.
The Wu-Tang Clan rapper says the album will not feature his signature soul sampling sound but will be more in the vein of his remixes with Beyonce and Ne-Yo.
“It's still gonna be street but it's R&B though,” Ghostface told Hot 97 personality Miss Info. “I’m doing 13 cuts but its still street though. I got my 'Wildflowers’ on it and all that. I'm just going in from all angles and shit”
Ghostface refused to reveal his collaborators on the album. He also did not reveal the project’s title or release date.
Samuel L Jackson recently revealed that he would like to see Outkast rapper Andre 3000 play the lead character in the live-action film of the popular Spike TV cartoon, Afro Samurai.
Jackson provides the voice for the main character in Afro Samurai cartoon and also serves as an executive producer for the show.
“When I look at [Afro Samurai], I see Andre 3000,” Jackson told MTV.
Jackson divulged that a script for the movie is still being worked on. He plans to play the main character's father in the movie
A video game for Afro Samurai is expected to hit stores soon and the show's second season will premiere in 2009.

Jacki-O recently revealed some shocking info about her first experiences in the industry, and it's not pretty.
In a recent issue of Hip Hop Weekly, the female rapper claims she had to sleep with a record executive at Poe Boy Entertainment -- where she signed her first deal -- to receive a $10,000 advance that she was previously promised.
According to Jacki-O, all the other acts on the label received their money, except her. When she asked about it, she was given an ultimatum.
"Everybody that signed [to Poe Boy] had gotten their advance money, but when it came time for me to get my advance, I had to f*** for my advance," Jacki-O told the magazine. "It was ten stacks and I had to f*** for it. So naturally, it wasn’t something that I’m proud of doing."
After receiving flack for the comments, which many readers felt were disgraceful, the rapper recently released a statement, explaining her reasoning behind letting out those skeletons from her closet. She is adamant at saying wasn't trying to glorify the incident, and that her intentions were just to reveal the ugly side of the industry that's rarely seen.
"Obviously my interview was read and what was taken out of it was the negative and not what was intended," she said in a statement. "My intentions was to really to express the regret that I had for having to have sex and just the way that people are abused when they are under authority. When you in a situation when someone is telling you, 'Hey, this is your dream, you can be this, you can go off and do what you love to do, which is write music and be an artist, but you gotta have sex.' I'm from Liberty City, Pork 'N Beans projects. I mean, come on.
"I wasn't glorifying having to have sex with someone for 10 grand. I wasn't trying to glorify that. I was trying to express the regret that I had and tell other women that you don't gotta do that. That was a wrong turn that I took," she continued.
Despite going through with the sexual favor, Jacki says she's "not a whore," and instead just a victim of someone's abuse their authority.
"I don't think it's a problem with the women, it's a problem with people that abuse their authority," Jacki says. "... I'm not a whore. I don't go around having sex to get to the top.
"I'm very talented and my music speaks for itself. I don't have to have sex to get to where I need to be at. The authority that I was under ... I was being abused by the authority."
In 2004, Jacki-O released her debut album, Poe Little Rich Girl, on TVT Records. It peaked at no. 95 on the Billboard 200.
She's since left TVT and Poe Boy Entertainment, and launched her own Jack Move Entertainment. She's currently prepping a new mixtape, and shopping for a new record deal.

According to XXL, incarcerated rapper Remy Ma has retained new legal representation. The Bronx-bred artist is now being represented by William Murphy, Jr., who will handle Remy’s appeals case. The rapper was convicted in March of this year of shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph during an verbal altercation that escalated into violence.
In May, a New York judge sentenced Remy Ma to eight years in prison on a number of counts, including assault and weapons charges.
She’s hoping her new prominent lawyer can reverse her conviction.
“With the addition of Mr. Murphy…I now believe I have assembled a team that will have the might and expertise to tell my side of the story. I am confident that after hearing everything my side will prevail. Mr. Murphy comes highly recommended and I am pleased that he has agreed to lead my defense team.”
In the past, Murphy has represented Don King and DMX. Previously, Remy Ma was represented first by Scott Leemon then Ivan S. Fisher
