Def Jam Executive VP Shakir Stewart Reported Dead

Billboard.com reports Def Jam executive vice president, and Oakland, California native Shakir Stewart committed suicide Saturday in New York. Various sources confirm Stewart's body was found in his apartment earlier today.

Stewart made news in June when he succeeded Jay-Z as Def Jam's executive vice president; he was formerly the senior vice president and A&R. He had a proven track record as both an executive and publisher with Hitco Music Publishing, where he served as general manager and vice president. Prior to bringing Beyonce, to Hitco, Stewart held similar positions as a member of the executive A&R team at Arista Records and A&R consultant with LaFace Records.

Stewart was also responsible for helping remake the image of Def Jam with the signings and development of both Young Jeezy and Rick Ross. When the Oakland native was promoted over the summer, both Island/Def Jam Chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid and COO Steve Bartels were effusive in their praise of Stewart.

"Shakir has been an integral part of Def Jam's chemistry ever since he joined the company in 2004," said Bartels. "His instincts for searching out new artists is talked about throughout the industry. In addition, his understanding of every facet of Def Jam's business operation makes us confident in his leadership of the company into its third decade."

Uncutmag sends our condolences to the family and friends of Shakir Stewart.
He will be missed.

According to Variety, the rapper-turned-mega actor will both write and executive produce an untitled show aiming to offer the major network something different to help compete with TV ratings.

9 BMF Members Sentenced To Prison Time

Nine members of famed criminal organization the Black Mafia Family (BMF) were sentenced to prison time in Atlanta on October 29th for their role in the massive cocaine and crack distribution throughout the nation's biggest cities.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, nine BMF individuals were handed sentences ranging from at least four years to over 16 1/2 behind bars. Upon their release, each one will immediately be placed on probation.

Requesting U.S. District Judge Orinda Evans for enrollment in an intensive drug program in prison to help reduce their time, along with apologizing to the families they have affected, the group were given their terms for over nine hours in court.

Beginning in the 80s by brothers Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory and Terry "Southwest T" Flenory by selling drugs in Detroit schools and later expanding throughout Los Angeles and Atlanta. BMF took a legitimate role in hip-hop around 2000 setting up their label, Black Mafia Family Entertainment, and their flagship artist, Bleu DaVinci (born Barima McKnight).

After the brothers pleaded guilty in November 2007 to various drug charges, more members began to testify along with 16 who were indicted in Atlanta.

DaVinci, known for collaborating on records with established artists like Fabolous, Mistah Fab and Young Jeezy, was sentenced to five years behind bars for drug conspiracy.

"Eighty thousand sorries won't work, and I know that," he told AJC. "I have to own up to my actions."

M.O.P. Sues WWE & John Cena For 150K

M.O.P have filed a lawsuit against the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and wrestler John Cena for $150,000 claiming his theme song "Time Is Now" samples one of their tracks.

According to TMZ, Lil' Fame and Billy Danze allege the organization had unauthorized permission to use elements of their 2000 smash hit "Ante Up" and used a receptionist to sign off on the license. While not sampling the entire piece, M.O.P claim a distinct phrase is unlawfully used in Cena's theme song.

"The Infringing Work includes a distinctive 'freestyle' rap -- 'BRRR Abado' that has been sampled from the Infringed Work and is clearly repeated three times in the Infringing Work, at the introduction, the second chorus, and the third chorus," the lawsuit reads. "Upon information and belief, in or about April, 2005, defendants, WWE and Cena commenced using the Infringing Work as defendant Cena's 'theme' and licensed the Infringing Work to various third parties including SONY, among others."

Having appeared on multiple retail products including the WWE's soundtrack series, the group are requesting substantial damages to be rewarded and that the unauthorized song be destroyed.

"Plaintiff is further entitled to recover from the defendants the damages sustained by plaintiff as a result of defendants' acts of copyright infringement," it reads. "Plaintiff is at present unable to ascertain the full extent of the monetary damage plaintiff has suffered by reason of defendants' acts of copyright infringement but believes such damages exceed $150,000."

Cena is known for rapping and freestyling to the ring during WWE matches and also released his debut hip-hop album You Can't See Me via Columbia and WWE Records. The 17-track disc features Bumpy Knuckles and Esoteric plus producers Chaos, Eligh, Freakas and Jake One.

Notorious B.I.G. Documentary Due In January

On the heels of the motion picture release of Notorious, comes an inside look at the “real” Christopher Wallace in the documentary Biggie Small: Rap Phenomenon. The uncut documentary will come straight to DVD and include home video from Biggie’s close friend D-Roc as well as unseen interviews.

Stephen Bolles, Media Director of Gold Dust Media said this documentary offers a new perspective on the late Hip Hop Icon. “There are a lot of documentaries dealing with the drama of [Biggie’s] life or his beef with the west coast, but this documentary offers an inside look at the real Biggie, on and off stage.”

The documentary features interviews with Biggie as well as appearances by D-Roc, Diddy, Lil Kim, Lil Cease, Jay-Z, L.O.X., Damon Dash, DJ Enuff and Datwon Thomas.

Mr. Bolles said the film offers a complimentary look to Biggie compared to the upcoming motion picture Notorious. “[That film] is the Hollywood take on Biggie’s life, whereas [Biggie Small: Rap Phenomenon] is the raw footage; it’s like the two sides of a coin.”

“The DVD will also offer insight into Biggie’s dreams and aspirations as interviews delve into more personal subject matter,” Mr. Bolles said.

Biggie Small: Rap Phenomenon is produced by Biggie’s close friend Damion Butler, known to some as D-Roc and directed by April Maiya. The film hits stores January 27, 2009 on Gold Dust Media.

Mack 10 Stars in Los Angeles Based Hustler Movie

Mack 10 has recently starred in the independent film It Ain't Easy. Although the movie was released in late September, it has managed, surprisingly, to do well, selling soundly on Amazon and Wal-Mart, and receiving quite a buzz on the streets.

After breaking ties with the Westside Connection camp earlier this year and with reports of being replaced by L.A.'s own The Game, Mack 10 is continuing to stay in the spotlight with his independent record label Hoo Bangin’ Records, as well as his film endeavors.

In It Ain't Easy, Mack plays a Los Angeles hustler, born to a proclaimed pimp and street-smart prostitute, and whose harsh upbringing turns him into a ruthless individual. Joined by Clifton Powell, (who is well known for his role as Pinky in Next Friday) and comedian Katt Williams, Mack 10 makes his seventh film appearance an interesting one.

Dr. Dre Sues Friend For $100,000

Dr. Dre has filed a lawsuit against Bruce Williams ,author of Rollin' With Dre: The Unauthorized Account: An Insider's Tale of the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of West Coast Hip Hop for a sum of $101,377.85.

According to TMZ.com, Dre alleges that he loaned Williams the money, which was never returned.

Williams released the book last march, which detailed his life working alongside the Hip Hop producer. He was described as Dr. Dre's go-to guy for over 16 years. The book touches on Dre's personal and professional life, as well as describing some of the more mysterious events in Hip Hop, such as Death Row's internal operations.

It is, at this point, unclear what Dre's alleged loan was for ; in Williams' book, he details a falling out with the Hip Hop producer, though has been no indication that it is related.

Jay-Z Fills In For Lil Wayne At Boston Show

Boston radio station JAM'N 94.5 scheduled a Monster Jam lineup that included the two Carters, Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. However, Lil Wayne did not perform, despite showing up to the venue.

According to reports, Wayne showed up to the TD Banknorth Garden and was asked to be frisked by security. He rejected this and declined to cooperate with security.

Another Carter, writer Lauren Carter from the Boston Herald, wrote about the event for the newspaper.

Carter states, "[Wayne] was apparently unable or unwilling to get through TD Banknorth Garden security. So instead of performing his set as scheduled, he left."

Brandy and Yung Berg gave short performances and Ne-Yo also performed, while Jay-Z extended his set to make up for the loss of Weezy.

The Boston Globe also reported on the event, calling Jay's 90 minute set explosive. The performance included his speech about Sen. Obama and change, as he continued his quest to speak about the election.

T.I. Asked to Remix NBC Jingle

As part of the promotion, NBC has also asked artists such as The Flaming Lips, BB King and Clint Black to all make their own versions as well.

The promos of T.I. and his collaboration will start airing around Thanksgiving.

50 Cent To Produce Jam Master Jay Documentary

50 Cent will be serving as the executive producer of an upcoming documentary which chronicles the life of RUN DMC's Jam Master Jay.

According to MTV, the documentary is titled Two Turntables and a Microphone and features interviews with various people who were close to Jam Master Jay including 50 Cent, Onyx, Rev Run and Russell Simmons.

Jam Master Jay played a major part in the early stages of 50 Cent's career. He was shot to death in his Queens studio in 2002 and his murder has not been solved.

“It's not a random act of violence. People just don't walk in your studio, shoot and kill you with several other people around, and no one knows anything,” 50 Cent said. “I believe the documentary sheds light on it - a little bit. It creates a clearer picture of what actually happened at that point. People just heard, 'Jam Master Jay got shot.’ They don't understand the circumstances. (The film) creates some clarity.”

A release date for the documentary was not revealed.

Spice 1 Plots Comeback With Album, Film

Spice 1 spoke in a recent post-concert interview with LdTV about his upcoming projects and how he has battled back after being shot last December. Spice also announced a new album and a new movie are in the works.

"We’ve been mixing down a new album," says the original Dangerous Crew member. "The problem is that the album is banging hard, but we’re having a hard time to determine the single. It's hard to choose, so were giving a bunch of songs off the album to radio stations and letting [the fans] decide on what the single will be."

Spice 1 said his new album, Home Sweet Home, is almost completed. Guest appearances include Daz Dillenger, Scarface, Devin the Dude and possibly Too Short. He also addressed coming back to the game after the drama of the shooting almost a year ago.

"I am trying to concentrate on being a businessman these days," Spice 1 adds. "I’ve shown people what I can do lyrically and on the mic; now it's time to show them what I can do mentally."

Spice also says a comedy movie in the vein of hit movie Friday, entitled Heartbreak Hotel, could also be released this year or early in 2009. An official release date for Home Street Home has not been announced.

50 Cent Talks About 808s & Heartbreak

50 Cent is no stranger to Kanye West's music. The two battled it out last year in a SoundScan clash which West was eventually declared the victor of.

This year however, Fif will be releasing his forthcoming LP, Before I Self Destruct, a week later than Kanye's 808 & Heartbreaks.

In a recent interview with MTV News, 50 says it'll only be another showdown "if you'd like it to be."

"There's no comparisons in us as artists. It's the yin and the yang. It's almost the opposite. It was almost taboo in hip-hop for you to make a love record. That was reserved for LL Cool J: 'I Need Love' and 'Luv U Better.' He was the only hip-hop artist that's actually done that, prior to what I see [now] with Kanye. For him to make an entire love album, it's pretty much based on ... love and Auto-Tunes: 808s & Heartbreak. I can't wait to see what this does."

"I'm sorry, this is incredible," 50 continued with a chuckle. "I can't wait to see how the public responds to this. My fans are real critical to me. I've raised the bar in a lot of ways. They don't allow anything less than what could be considered hands down the best material from me. If I release 'Straight to the Bank' or 'Amusement Park,' they'll give me resistance until I deliver 'I Get Money.' "

Before I Self Destruct hits stores on December 9, while Kanye's 808s & Heartbreak drops November 25.

Restraining Order Issued Against Lyfe Jennings

An Atlanta judge has issued a temporary restraining order against R&B singer Lyfe Jennings for threatening his ex-girlfriend Joy Bounds.

Earlier this week, Jennings was arrested on various charges for allegedly storming into an Atlanta home looking for Bounds and firing a gun in the street.

Jennings would try to run from police who arrived at the scene but the singer crashed and sustained minor injuries. He also refused to take a sobriety test.

According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Bounds was granted the restraining order on Wednesday (October 22). Bounds requested the restraining order claiming that Jennings had repeatedly threatened her.

Bounds also claimed Jennings trashed most of her clothes and shoes, turned her electricity off and threatened to kill her male friend. She also said that the singer threatened to report a car she was driving was stolen.

“He has told me that if he can’t have me, nobody can,” Bounds said a court document.

The restraining order prohibits Jennings from having any contact with or coming within 200 yards of Bounds or their two children. Jenning s was also ordered to pay $5000 in child support to Bounds and give her various pieces of furniture.

Jennings and Bounds are expected to appear in court on November 6th to determine if the restrictions should remain.

Jennings is out on $50,000 bail and has not commented on the arrest or the restraining order.
